Appalachia's black lung rates have reached alarming levels, surpassing nearly 50 years of data, as miners' protections stall. This devastating trend is attributed to the excessive inhalation of coal mine dust and silica dust, which is 20 times more toxic. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reports that working veteran underground coal miners in central Appalachia are suffering from incurable and fatal lung disease at unprecedented rates. The situation is dire, with miners working in Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia experiencing the worst rates of coal workers' pneumoconiosis, or black lung disease. One in three miners tested positive for black lung in the last five years, a rate not seen since 1978. The consequences are dire, with more than 1,700 coal miners dying from black lung from 2020 to 2023. The issue is further exacerbated by the mining industry's focus on cutting costs and prioritizing profit over worker safety, leading to a lack of proper dust control measures and ventilation systems. The National Mining Association (NMA) argues that compliance with silica dust exposure limits has increased, but a high rate of compliance doesn't guarantee miner protection. The NMA also advocates for the use of dust masks, but federal law treats underground coal mining differently, requiring companies to prevent unsafe conditions. The situation is dire, with miners facing a median survival rate of less than seven years for lung transplants, and the burden of black lung disease falling on miners and their families. The need for action is urgent, and the will to act is crucial to prevent further suffering and loss of life.
